Spain’s most famous film locations

Spain has been a place of inspiration for many filmmakers. The most famous American directors have fallen in love with the beauty of Spain’s landscapes to film their productions. Here are our choices of the most famous series and films that were shot in Spain. Have you seen them all? But most importantly, have you been to all the places where these productions were filmed?

Money Heist (La Casa de Papel)
The heist that brought the robbers with the iconic Dalí masks to fame takes place in the Royal Mint of Spain. But that’s a fiction. In reality, the location is the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) building, whose well-known façade you’ll recognise straight away on Calle Serrano. And there are more. The Bank of Spain robbery actually takes place in the Spanish Ministry of Public Works in Nuevos Ministerios.

Star Wars
Star Wars is one of the most famous sagas in the history of cinema. But perhaps not everyone has noticed that the Plaza de España in Seville features in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. This Seville monument was the setting George Lucas chose to film the arrival of Senator Amidala, Anakin Skywalker and R2-D2 on the planet of Naboo.

Black Mirror
The science fiction series has gained recognition from audiences for its stories about different hypothetical versions of the near future. Tejeda, in Gran Canaria was the main setting of the sixth episode of the third season. “Hated in the Nation”, directed by James Hawes, was filmed in the old town centre and busiest streets of Tejeda.

Game Of Thrones
Starting with its fifth season, Game of Thrones included a long list of shooting locations across Spain, from Catalonia to Castilla – La Mancha, from the Region of Valencia to Navarra, Extremadura or Andalusia.
In season 7, Game of Thrones returns to Spain. This now totals to 14 locations in Spain being filmed in the well-known series. Here we list a few: the beach of Muriola, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Zumaia, Almodóvar del Rio, Los Barruecos, Cáceres, Santiponce. The beautiful Spanish landscapes and castles have truly made the show one of a kind.

Elite
The TV series “Elite” was filmed primarily in the Madrid region of Spain, with several specific locations used throughout the series. Las Encinas, the school in the show, was filmed at the European University of Madrid. Other locations include the towns of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Guadarrama, and Collado Villalba. Additionally, the Bridge of Los Arroyos Reservoir was used as a filming location.

The Witcher
The Netflix Blockbuster that has captivated even those of us who weren’t familiar with the videogame, was filmed in many locations throughout Europe. However, some of the most iconic scenes of the first season take place in the Canary Islands.
